Research Activities
My work focuses on mathematical physics, with an emphasis on string theory, M-theory, and gauge theories more generally. My work places particular emphasis on the underlying mathematical structures and applications to and from modern mathematics. I like to call this endeavor "Physical Mathematics." For a detailed explanation of what this term means see the essay "Physical Mathematics and the Future". For a more up-to-date view see A Panorama Of Physical Mathematics c. 2022. The best way to see what I am currently working on is to look at the most recent talks I have given in the list below, or search for my papers on HEP SPIRES. Among my research interests are:
- The relation between four-dimensional twisted supersymmetric theories and topological invariants of manifolds, leading to new insights into quantum field theory and low-dimensional differential topology.
- The development of topological field theory and the "functorial formulation of quantum field theory," closely related to recent developments in generalizations of symmetry in field theory.
- The theory of branes and generalized abelian gauge theories in supergravity, involving topological issues related to generalized differential cohomology theories, especially K-theory, self-dual fields, anomaly cancellation, and noncommutative geometry.
- Two-dimensional conformal field theories and vertex operator algebras; rational CFTs and applications to anyons, nonabelions, and moonshine phenomena.
- Mathematics associated to BPS state counting: wall-crossing phenomena, relations to Hitchin systems and hyperkähler geometry, spectral networks, exact WKB, and homotopical algebra structures in QFT.
- Effective low energy supergravity theories in string compactification and nonperturbative stringy effects in effective supergravities.
- Applications of automorphic forms to conformal field theory, string compactification, black hole entropy counting, and AdS/CFT.
- Other potential connections to number theory.
- String field theory.
- String cosmology and time-dependence in string theory.
- Does the alleged "landscape of N=1 effective four-dimensional string vacua" really exist?

- "Square Dancing And Its Relation To Mathematics" (with Karin Rabe), TASI 2023, June 13, 2023. Video. Erratum (slide 35, ~27:30): The set of dancer states over generic FASRs has 8 possible states, not 4, with structure group G = (ℤ/4ℤ × ℤ/4ℤ)/D where D ≅ ℤ/2ℤ is generated by (2,2). The situation is further complicated on special FASRs.
