This is a course on math methods for first year graduate students
This course meets on Wednesdays, 12pm - 1:30pm and
Fridays 1:30pm-3:00pm in Serin E385. PLEASE NOTE THE
NONSTANDARD TIMES!
Note the location! The first class will meet on September 10, 2014.
We will make up the lectures later in the semester. One make up class
will be 3:30-5:00 on Halloween, Oct. 31.
N.B. There will be no class Nov. 19 and Nov. 21. Also, the class for the
week of Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving week) will take place on Monday, Nov. 24,
1:30 - 3:00. We will hold class in Serin E372.

Chapter 1 lecture notes. We will only cover some of the material. This includes
Sections 2,3,4. (Only the beginning of Section 4.4.) Skip Section 5: We will return to it after
we talk a little about topology. All of Section 6 except 6.5. Section 7. Skip Section 8.
Section 9 up to example 9.3 (add example 9.6). Section 10 up to example 10.1. Sections 11.1-11.3.
Skip 11.4, 11.5. Sections 12.2 and 12.3 (skipping the proof of Kronecker's theorem).
Just a few brief comments on 12.4. Skip section 13.
