Physics 618: Applied Group Theory. Spring 2023. Professor Gregory Moore

This is a course on group theory primarily intended for physics graduate students intending to specialize in condensed matter or particle theory. It will also have much material of interest to mathematics students with some interest in mathematical physics. A more detailed course description of a past incarnation can be found here. We cannot cover all the material mentioned in that document: I am always open to requests for covering specific topics. gm

The first class is Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 10:20am in ARC 204. Subsequent classes will be held in Serin 372E. Auditors are welcome, but they must contact me first. If room technology allows, I will do it in hybrid mode with in-person lectures in 372E accompanied by zoom. We will then meet on subsequent Mondays and Thursdays 10:20am - 11:40am, with a spring break, until Monday, May 1. The final paper is due by the end of exam period, i.e., by the end of the day (11:59pm) Wednesday, May 10, 2023 as a pdf in my email inbox.

A list of suggested topics for the term paper can be found here. You should feel free to choose another topic as long as it makes some use of both group theory and physics. Check with me on whatever topic you choose.
