Transport / Hotel Information

Transportation Information

The meeting is being held in room 385E (Theory Seminar Room) of Rutgers Department of Physics & Astronomy, located on Busch Campus in Piscataway, NJ. Piscataway is about 35 miles southwest of New York City. The department web site has extensive directions for travelers. In summary,

  • Fly: Newark Airport is most convenient locally, about 20 miles from the department.
    • Unless you arrive very late, we recommend that you can take the Newark Airport "Airtrain" to the NJ Transit station, and then NJ Transit Northeast Corridor (towards Trenton direction) to New Brunswick. Trains run about every 30 minutes most of the day. Ticket machines are by the airport Airtrain entrances, and tickets are $12.75. Train schedules can be checked here. See also the train information below.
    • Taxis are about $80 from the airport; you can prepay at the airport taxi stand with credit card for an extra fee. Also Rutgers University has special rates with several shuttle services; see the Rutgers ground transportation page.
    • Rental cars are available for about $150 or so for two day rentals.
  • Take the train: Amtrak rarely stops in New Brunswick, so you will need to switch to NJ Transit in Trenton (coming from the south) or at your convenience between New York City and Metropark, depending on your train, coming from the north. Once you get to New Brunswick, you can take a taxi from the train station to the conference hotel or the department. Coming from the north (NYC/Newark), exit down the stairs at the back end of the train.
  • Drive: Take exit 9 of NJ Turnpike / Rte. 95 to Rte 18 west. Stay to the left as you go past route 1, through New Brunswick, and across the Raritan River to Busch Campus in Piscataway -- do not exit in New Brunswick to other Rutgers campuses. The conference hotel is immediately to the right as you go through the tolls at exit 9.

Duke Workshop

For anyone also going to the Duke Workshop, there are two major alternatives to getting to Rutgers. First, it appears that most major airlines have flights leaving Raleigh/Durham airport by about 7 PM, arriving in Newark a few hours later after one connection. Second, it is a ~7 hour drive, if you only make one short stop for gas, etc.

Workshop Hotel

We have arranged for a block of 30 rooms for Saturday March 13 and Sunday March 14 at the Holiday Inn Express, 4 Tower Center Boulevard, East Brunswick, NJ 08816. The hotel is located near exit 9 of NJ Turnpike / rte 95, and directions can be found at the hotel web site. For those taking the train to New Brunswick, it is an about 2.5-mile taxi ride along rte 18 from the train station. Based on your registrations, we will attempt to arrange rides between the hotel and the department.

The conference rate is $85 + tax per room per night. To get this rate, please call the hotel at 732-247-6800, and ask for the "Rut block group" or the "Rutgers EIC Workshop" rate - either should work. All reservations have to be made by Saturday Feb 20 to get the special rate. At that point, any unused rooms will be released and the special rate will not be available.

The drive from the conference hotel to Busch Campus should take less than 10 minutes on Sunday, but a few minutes more on Monday due to traffic.

Parking on Campus

Physics & Astronomy is at 136 Frelinghuysen Road, to the upper left of the map below. (Note that letters in the roads indicate Rutgers bus routes, and circles in the roads indicate Rutgers bus stops.) Be aware that if you use map websites the department is incorrectly positioned further down Frelinghuysen Rd., rather than at the corner of Allison Rd. Anyone who will park on Rutgers University Busch Campus for the meeting needs a parking permit for their car, which can be be found here. Print out the second page and place it on the left side of your dashboard. We will have spare permits on hand in case you forget yours. Parking permits are for lot 53A, next to the golf course.

The basic instructions for parking permits are:

  • DISPLAY THE PERMIT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF VEHICLE DASHBOARD.
  • PARK IN THE LOT LISTED.
  • THE PERMIT DOES NOT PROVIDE FREE METER PARKING.
