Common Programs for Physicists

This page points to introductions to the most useful utilities we have in the Unix environment on our Sun system, from the point of view of the usefulness for physics. Some of these are also available on platforms other than the Suns. Towards the end there is another list of information about less often used utilities.

Note that some of these documents are prepared for use elsewhere and may not exactly fit the environment of the Physics Department.

• CDE X windows environment and Gnome X windows environment.
• Gnu Emacs Introduction, Emacs Reference and Emacs Command Summary.
• Tex and Latex
• Symbolic Math, Mathematica and Maple
• Programming in C, C++.
• Mathematical subroutine libraries: IMSL, NAG and Numerical Recipes.
• PGPLOT A set of easy-to-use fortran- or C- callable subroutines for making plots.
• XMGR or ACE/gr is a 2D plotting tool for X Window System. It uses an OSF Motif-based user interface. Local help on xmgr is also available.
• E-mail at Physics Department (programs, configuration,...) and general Rutgers resource on Electronic Mail.
• Working from home.
• We have a little information about personal WWW pages and HTML as well as web support at Rutgers.
