Structure of Very Heavy Nuclei: Pushing the Boundaries
Department of Physics and Applied Physics University of Massachusetts Lowell The talk will focus on the science and techniques involved in the spectroscopy of very heavy neutron-rich (N>150) nuclei at high angular momentum. Results from a series of experiments using inelastic and transfer reactions with heavy beams, radioactive targets and the Gammasphere array at the ATLAS facility at Argonne will be discussed. Previews of recent and planned fusion-evaporation studies of Z>100 nuclei with the newly-commissioned Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer (AGFA) will be presented, as well as new directions of isomer spectroscopy using fragmentation reactions at NSCL.
