Wheeler's Toroidal Nuclei
Wheeler suggested that under appropriate conditions, a nucleus may
assume a toroidal shape [1]. Favorable conditions include a
strong nuclear shell effect [2,3], a large Coulomb energies [2,3],
a large angular angular momentum [4,5], nuclear dynamics [6], and
combinations thereof [2-12]. The presence of these favorable
conditions leading to toroidal nuclei as local energy minima in
the light, intermediate, and superheavy regions [2-12] will be
examined. Recent experimental evidence of toroidal high-spin
isomers from Texas A & M in the disassembly of highly excited 28Si
will be discussed [13].
