Machine Shop
Our Machine shop serves both the physics and
chemistry departments, has a staff of four, and a complete set of
state of the art machine tools. Our foreman,
Bill Schneider, leads the effort. He and
Eric Paduch,
Ernie Erskine,
Arvid Knudsen provide highly skilled machine shop support to our
department's research and teaching activities.
In addition to a full complement of milling machines,
lathes, grinders, etc., our shop has a Computer Numerically
Controlled (CNC) milling machine and sophisticated equipment for
ultra-high vacuum welding. Our CNC milling machine has been used for
high volume fabrication of parts for experiments at SLAC,
Fermilab,
and CEBAF.
We have welded several large vacuum chambers for experiments in
surface science and condensed matter physics.
We have excellent computer facilities including computer-aided design and manufacturing programs.
Users who make use of our machine shop regularly
can use our online tracking system to aid submission and progress of work
being performed in the Machine Shop. Access to the system is restricted to
Rutgers University computers.
