About the Course and the Instructor

Prerequisite: Physics 361 (Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics). If you have not taken Physics 361 before, see the instructor immediately.

Lectures: Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:40 pm - 3:00 pm  in SEC Room 218 on Busch Campus.

Instructor: Prof. Sean Oh will be in charge of this course.
Office: Serin W121 (732-445-5500x4017)

Lab: Serin W132 (732-445-5500x7610, x7611)
E-mail: ohsean at physics.rutgers.edu
Office Hours: Appointment based; send an email to me before you come.
Mailbox:  Located on the second floor of Serin Physics building.

Grader: Prof. Claud Lovelace will be in charge of grading the homeworks.  If you have complaints on your graded homeworks, return them to me with a written explanation, and I will have them regraded.

Textbooks

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics by David J. Griffiths, 2nd Ed., (Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2005)
is the required text book.

Course Objectives

In this course, students will learn how to apply quantum mechanics to solve important physical problems going beyond Physics 361 level.  Quantum mechanis is behind not only all fields of modern physics but also many technological applications such as lasers and semiconductor electronics.  So whatever students' future careers will be, getting a solid grasp of quantum mechanics is important.

Because of time limitations we will cover only selected topics from Griffiths.

Finally please do not hesitate to give me feedback (either positive or negative) on the course on a continual basis before/after class, in my office, etc. . I will try to tune the course based on students' feedback.

Homework, Exams and Grades

Homeworks:  Homework will be assigned every Wednesday of each week and will be due Wednesday of the following week in class.  Late homeworks will be accepted in my mailbox only until noon of the following day (Thursday) after the due date with a 20 % penalty.  Later homeworks will not be accepted unless you have a convincing excuse and prearrange with me before the due dates.  The solutions will be posted as soon as I collect the homeworks.

Collaboration with peers is encouraged, because it is a well established fact that (even the smartest) students learn more through group discussion than studying alone.  For best learning process, students should do all the problems themselves first and discuss with others for difficult problems.  However, students should not copy others' solutions. If evidence of copying solutions is found, all the students involved will receive zero grade for that particular homework set.

Quizzes: There will be occasional 5 minute quizzes at the beginning of class to check the reading assignmentments to be covered on the day; so you should read the reading assignment before coming to class; see the syllabus for the topics for each class.  Each quiz will be equivalent to one homework assignment.

One lowest homework or quiz will be dropped for the final grade

Exam:
           Midterm:   Oct 20 in class
           Final (CUMULATIVE!): Dec 22, 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Grades:  Homeworks/Quizzes  (20%), Midterm (30%), and Final (50%).

Students with Disabilities
If you have a disability, you are urged to speak to me EARLY IN THE SEMESTER to make the necessary arrangements to support a successful learning experience. Also, you must arrange a letter from your College's Disabilities Coordinator verifying that you have a disability. A list of the College Coordinators can be found by clicking here.
