Textbook

Quantum Mechanics  by Bruce Cameron Reed (Jones and Bartlett, 2008)  is the required text book.

Course Objectives

In this course, students will be introduced to quantum mechanics: matter waves, uncertainty principle, stationary states and operators; Schroedinger equation and its solutions for simple potentials; hydrogen atom, quantization of angular momentum, etc.  Quantum mechanis is behind not only all fields of modern physics but also many technological applications such as lasers and semiconductor electronics.  So whatever students' future careers will be, getting a solid grasp of quantum mechanics is important.

I will closely follow the textbook in the order presented in the book.

Quantum mechanics are heavily mathematically oriented and also conceptually difficult to grasp.   Although lectures will be more focused on concepts sometimes skipping lengthy mathematical derivations,  students should still try to do as many mathematical derivations as possible by themselves.

Finally please do not hesitate to give me feedback (either positive or negative) on the course on a continual basis before/after class, in my office, etc. . I will try to tune the course based on students' feedback.

Homework, Exams and Grades

Homeworks:  Homework assignment will be posted on this website every Monday and will be due Monday of the following week at the beginning of class.  Late homeworks will be accepted in my mailbox only until noon of the next day (Tuesday) with a 20 % penalty.  Later homeworks will not be accepted unless you have a convincing excuse and prearrange with me before the due dates.  The solutions will be posted soon after the homeworks are collected.

Collaboration with peers is encouraged, because it is a well established fact that (even the smartest) students learn more through group discussion than studying alone.  For best learning process, students should do all the problems themselves first and discuss with others for difficult problems.  However, students should not copy others' solutions. If evidence of copying solutions is found, all the students involved will receive zero grade for that particular homework set.

One lowest homework will be dropped for the final grade.

Quizzes: There will be occasional 10 minute quizzes at the end class and will be announced in advance. No makeup quiz will be allowed. If you are going to miss the quiz day of the class with convincing reason (such as religious holiday),then you have to let me know in advance.

Quizzes will be closed book and will need a scientific calculator.

Exam:
           Midterm:   Oct 19 in class
           Final (CUMULATIVE!): Dec 21, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Exampes will be closed book, but one Letter size formula sheet is allowed. You should use only one side of the sheet and only basic formulas are allowed. The sheet will be collected together with the answer book.

Grades:  Homeworks  (20%), Quizzes (20%), Midterm (20%), and Final (40%).
