A wealth of information is available from the websites that are cited in the articles of this issue. There is much to study, although not every contributor seems to remember that real systems must be grounded not only in science, but also in technology, economic viability, and the political will and support to bring them to fruition.

Editorial: Global warming:the hidden theme of this issue.

The role of nuclear power in offsetting global warming. This article describes a workshop held in June 2007, and takes up about one quarter of the present issue. It begins with a contribution by nuclear enthusiast John Ritch, who proposes the construction of 10,000 reactors, and is rightly described by John Roeder as being at an "extremum of the spectrum". Other topics are proliferation and terrorism, new reactor designs, the nuclear fuel cycle, Yucca Mountain, the history of the Three-Mile Island accident, and nuclear power in France. There is also an in-depth economic analysis which comes to the conclusion that nuclear power costs no more than power from coal or wind, and that solar power is about 3 1/2 times as expensive. (See slide 7 of the power point presentation of Steve Fetter, which is reproduced here. This is just one example of the huge amount of information that is accessible from the website at the end of the article.)

Makhijani describes carbon-free, nuclear-free roadmap. Makhijani's contribution can be called visionary, at the opposite extreme from that of the nuclear enthusiast of the previous article. It includes a reference to a website on which Makhijani's book on the same subject is available.
