Teaching Assistant and Laboratory Instructor: Mr. Milos Milosavljevic, Busch Campus, ARC-228, Tel: (732)445-6887, e-mail: milos@physics.rutgers.edu
Textbook: The Science of Sound, 3rd Edition, by T.D. Rossing, F.R. Moore, & P.A. Wheeler (required) available from the bookstore.
Books on Reserve:
Vibrations and Waves, by A.P. French (Physics Library)
Science of Music, by James Jeans (Music Library)
On the Sensations of Tone, by Hermann von Helmholtz (Music Library)
Overview: The scientific basis of sound: waves, vibrating systems, normal modes, Fourier analysis and synthesis, perception and measurement of sound, noise, musical instruments, room acoustics, sound recording and reproduction, electronic synthesizers, and digital sound.
Format: The course consists of 2 lectures and 1 laboratory session each week.
Lectures: The lectures are given MW4* (1:25PM - 2:20PM) in the Physics Lecture Hall, Busch Campus.
Laboratory: The laboratory experiments are held on Friday, period 2 (9:20AM - 11:10AM), in the Serin Physics Building, Busch Campus, in either room 227 or 105. The lab schedule web page ( http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~jackph/2002s/labs.html) gives complete and up-to-date information on the lab experiments, including downloadable write-ups and report forms. Labs will need to be completed in class and handed in before you leave. Be sure to print out a copy of the write-up and report form beforehand, read it, and come to lab prepared!
Grading and Assessment: Final grades will be based on the following elements
Announcements: Special announcements will be posted on the web. The home page for the course is http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~jackph/2002s
