DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY RUTGERS - THE STATE UNIVERSITY Wednesday, January 27, 1999 Physics Lecture Hall, 4:30 PM The Magic Numbers of Maria Goeppert Mayer: The Past, The Present, and The Future Jolie A. Cizewski Department of Physics and Astronomy Rutgers Maria Goeppert Mayer received the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics for the development of the Shell Model of the structure of atomic nuclei. This talk will summarize some of the experimental data which supported the "magic numbers", numbers of neutrons or protons for nuclei with enhanced stability. Current studies of nuclear structure at the limits of stability for decay by proton emission and the heaviest nuclei will be highlighted. The talk will conclude with future prospects to study nuclei near the neutron-drip line with the next generation of radioactive ion beam accelerators and how such future studies could impact our understanding of nuclear shell structure.
