Energy and Society Fall'09 Busch Cogeneration Plant Tour
(Somalwar)
When:
During class on Monday November 16th. The first group (alphabetically,
David, Joshua to Mitchell, Samantha) reports at 140pm. The second group
(Mustufa, Asra to Verma, Vaibhav) will start the tour at 220pm.
Where:
At the cogeneration plant which is a five minute walk from the Allison
Road Classroom (ARC) building. From the ARC bus stop, on Allison road,
head towards Davidson Road (i.e., away from the golf course). When the
road ends at a T at Bevier Road, make a quick right-left and continue on
Titsworth place. Look up and you will see three gleaming stainless chimneys.
Congregate at the plant entrance ON TITSWORTH until your tour start
time. If the weather is inclement, go inside the building and wait
until I meet you at the door close to the start time. If you are late, come
straight to the control room.
Preparation:
See this webpage (half-way down the page) for a rudimentary description and
a plant map:

What to expect:
A real industrial operation. Noisy! There are three jet engines running in
that building. You will be given earplugs, so hearing the tour guide
(plant operator) will be difficult. Concentrate on observing: where does the
gas come in, where does the electricity go out, what happens to the leftover
heat (there are extra heaters), how does the supersaturated steam go out,
how is pollution controlled etc. Ask questions later as well.
