Speaker: Mohammad Kohandel Associate Professor and Head of Mathematical Medicine Laboratory Department of Applied Mathematics University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada Title: From mechanistic to machine learning approaches in computational biology of cancer Abstract: This talk will survey our integrative experimental and theoretical approaches in investigating cancer drug resistance and determining an optimal treatment strategy. I will share our recent work on the combination of experimental studies and system biology approach to investigate acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and its resistance to Bcl-2 inhibition. Also, I will discuss how system biology and machine learning approaches can be combined to study the effectiveness of PD-1 checkpoint inhibition in ex vivo cultures of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Finally, I will discuss the application of physics-informed neural networks in characterizing tumours.
