Getting Started

The purpose of this section is to get you running linux on the provided computers.

  1. Move the mouse on the computer to get out of the screen saver. If you see a login prompt: gselpc0x login: (for instance, gselpc01, then type vastro for the login, followed by the password (which I will tell you in class), and skip to step 4. If the screen is still blank, then get the Linux disk from me or one of the other helpers.

  2. Insert the floppy disk (it should be labeled Linux or something similar) and turn on the machine. The on switch lies above the keyboard but below the disk drive, and is a circular button

  3. It will take a few moments for the computer to initialize to Linux. After this you should see the screen clear and a login prompt: gselpc0x login: type vastro for the login, followed by the password (which I will tell you in class).
  4. You should see something like this /home/vastro$>$. After this, type startx to launch the window manager.
