If we say that a difference of 5 magnitudes is equal to a factor of 100 in brightness of two stars, why can't we define the magnitude scale by the following equation: 100 x (m1-m2)/5 = B2/B1? (After all, if m1=6 and m2=1, B2/B1=100).
