The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful to do so. He studies it because he takes pleasure in it; and he takes pleasure in it because it is beautiful... I mean the intimate beauty which comes from the harmonious order of its parts and which a pure intelligence can grasp.

As a DOE funded Graduate Student, I was selected to represent Rutgers University at the 54th "Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Graduate Students" in Lindau Germany. This was a unique honor and opportunity as the United States sent only 58 graduate students, all from different schools. The selection was competative and diverse, about 50% of the students in our group were physicists, the rest were chemisists, biologists, physical chemists, MD's, etc. This mixture provided for many stimulating conversations.
The following is a small collection of photographs that I took on this trip, there were so many that I had to greatly reduce the image quality to stay under disk quota, but I do have all the originals in very high quality. Please contact me if you wish to see a picture in greater resolution. I will also attempt to put brief tag-lines when I get the chance. Please enjoy !
Friday - June 25: Gathering in Washington DC
A quote that I saw in the Air and Space Museum's Planetary Exhibit:
Dr. Watson recollecting an encounter with his colleague Sherlock Holmes...
"My surprise reached a climax, however, when I found incidentally that he
was ignorant of the Copernican Theory and of the composition of the Solar
System. That any civilized human being in this nineteenth century should
not be aware that the earth travelled around the sun appeared to be to me
such an extraordinary fact that I could hardly realize it.
'You appear to be astonished,' he said, smiling at my expression of
surprise. 'Now that I do know it I shall do my best to forget it.'
'To forget it!'
'But the Solar System!' I protested.
'What the deuce is it to me?' he interrupted impatiently: ' you say that
we go round the sun. If we went around the moon it would not make a
pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.' "
