A montage of the planets ordered by distance from the Sun. Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun appears furthest in the background peaking out behind Venus. Earth is shown with its natural satellite, the Moon. Neptune appears in the foreground. Pluto, the outermost known planet, is not shown in this picture. With the exception of Venus, the images are in the visible band and are roughly what a human observer would see. The surface of Venus (which is always obscured by clouds) is portrayed by the radar view obtained by the Magellan spacecraft and displayed here in false color.
