(1) The reading from the NY Times is intended to get you thinking about
    the role of science (in this case physics) in the modern world.
    Write an essay that answers the following questions about uranium
    enrichment:
     (a) Why does uranium need to be enriched for use as a fuel or weapon?
     (b) What is the difference between bomb-grade uranium and
         uranium enriched for electric power?
     (c) What are the centrifuges mentioned in the article and how do
         they work?
     (d) How much enriched uranium is needed to make a bomb?
     (e) Is uranium the only possible fuel for a nuclear weapon?  If
         not, then what are the other fuels and how are they produced?
     Note that you will likely need to research other sources than the 
     assigned reading in order to answer these questions.  Be sure to
     cite the sources you use.

(2) The idea of "conservation laws" are fundamental to modern physics.
    Based on this week's reading ("E=MC^2"), write an essay on the
    development of the law of Conservation of Energy.  Be sure to consider
    the roles of observation, experiment, and theory in your response.

(3) Pick a topic for your midterm paper on an aspect of Einstein's
    life and write a brief outline for the paper.
