H/W assignment #4 Due at 12 noon on Oct 1 through sakai (1) Compare the concept of simultaneity under the view of Classical Mechanics (i.e., Galilean Transformations) with that of Einstein's view (i.e., expressed in Chapter 9 of "Relativity"). (2) An observer (S_1) at rest in the lab frame sees that lengths are contracted in a rocket ship moving past him. On the other hand an observer (S_2) at rest in the rocket, sees that lengths are contracted in the lab frame by the same amount. Is there a contradiction here? Discuss this paradox. (3) We haven't had much time to discuss the second reading from two weeks ago titled "The Mechanics of Newton..." . Write an essay on this reading demonstrating that you have understood the essential message that Einstein is trying to get across. Topics to address: causality, the differential law, Newton's key abstraction, the failure of Newtonian mechanics, the three weaknesses of Newton's theory, what role Newton's mechanics plays under special relativity, and the meaning of the last paragraph of the essay.
