(1) Write a two part essay based on this week's reading ("Astronomy"
    in "The Development of the Sciences" available through
    sakai). Part one should cover a topic in the reading that you
    consider to still be an active area of research in modern day
    astronomy. In part two, highlight an area of research in astronomy
    today that is not mentioned in the reading.  For each case justify
    your choices and explain your reasoning.

(2) The two readings this week from "Ideas and Opinions" cover
    Einstein's view of the scientific method and the tremendous
    importance of Newtonian mechanics to the development of physics. I
    want you to identify several concepts from the readings that you
    believe represent core elements of Einstein's scientific method.
    For example, one concept is that it is possible to assign a real
    existence to bodily objects. This was a core believe of Einstein's
    that made it difficult for him to accept the probabilistic view of
    the world provided by quantum theory.  In your essay discuss the
    concepts you identify (being sure to find at least one in each
    reading) and explain why you think they represent an important
    element in Einstein's thinking.
