H/W assignment #1 Due at 12 noon on Sept 10 through sakai (1) The theme of this week's seminars is "The End of Physics" which was an (obviously erroneous) idea touted by some famous physicists (e.g., Lord Kelvin) of the late 19th century. The idea was that the basic laws of physics had been discovered (such as Newton's laws of motion and universal gravitation and Maxwell's equations for electricity and magnetism) and that physicists could use these laws to describe all observed phenomena. With this in mind, write a two part essay based on topics from this week's reading ("Physics" in "The Development of the Sciences"). The first part of your essay should address a theme from the reading that you feel was relevant to the origin of Einstein's work on Relativity (i.e., signs of new physics). The second part should address an issue that you believe was not particularly relevant (i.e., old physics). For each case justify your choices and explain your reasoning. (2) Choose a theme from "The World as I See It" (p. 8) in "Ideas and Opinions" and discuss how it agrees or contrasts with your own views.
