Physics of Sound 301
Spring 2005
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #6
Due Friday March 4, 2005
RMW refers to the textbook The Science of Sound, 3rd
Edition, by T.D. Rossing, F.R. Moore, & P.A. Wheeler
- RMW, page 119, exercises 2 and 4.
- In class we talked about how the anatomical transfer function
(ATF) assists in eliminating front-back-overhead confusion in
localizing sounds. Is the ATF equally effective regardless of sound
frequency, more effective at higher frequencies, or more effective at
lower frequencies? Explain your reasoning using physical principles.
- If you go to low enough levels, the JND ("Just Noticeable
Difference") in sound level may become as large as 2 dB. Under those
conditions, what is the minimum detectable change in intensity,
expressed as a percentage?
- RMW, page 715, exercise 2.
