Physics of Sound 301
Spring 2005
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #2
Due Friday February 4, 2005
RMW refers to the textbook The Science of Sound, 3rd
Edition, by T.D. Rossing, F.R. Moore, & P.A. Wheeler
- RMW, page 58, exercise 3, 5, and 6.
- In class we measured the stretching of a wire suspended from the
ceiling. We found that the wire stretched by 0.5 cm when 8 kg of mass were
hung from it. After class I measured the wire's diameter to be 1/32 of an
inch and its length to be 5 m. What is the Young's modulus of the wire?
(Be sure to convert all units to the SI system - see section 1.11 of RMW.)
- Show that the equation for a traveling wave that I gave in class
[ y = y_m sin(kx - wt - P) ] is a solution of the wave equation. (Here I am
using w for omega, the angular frequency, and P for the phase of the wave.)
