Electronic
Effects in Single Crystals of Organic Molecular Semiconductors (this project has been
moved to the newly-established Podzorov’s lab at Rutgers) The
project focuses on exploration of intrinsic
(i.e., not limited by electronic defects) polaronic
and excitonic phenomena in small-molecule organic semiconductors.
Recent advances in the fabrication of single-crystal organic devices (and, in
particular, the fabrication of high-quality single-crystal organic
field-effect transistors in our group) open new exciting opportunities for
basic science and applications. Formation, dynamics and transport of polarons and excitons are at the heart of the operation
of organic field-effect transistors, photovoltaic cells, and light-emitting
diodes. Exploration of these processes in molecular crystals is
critical for the realization of ultimate performance of organic electronic
devices. The research has already significantly contributed to better
understanding of electronic and optical properties of organic semiconductors;
it elucidates the ultimate limits of the performance of organic electronic
devices and has an important impact on foundations of the emerging field of
“flexible” electronics.
