Ionization Cooling

Ionization cooling is particular to muon accelerators and is first put forward by S.Skrinsky.

Muons passing through a material lose energy and momentum through ionization reactions. If particle loses combined transversal and longitudinal momentum but is accelerated longitudinally by rf-cavity after the fact - the net effect will be in transverse cooling (transverse emmitance reduction). Limiting effect is multiple scattering which will in fact increase transverse emittance.
