HiRes - The High Resolution Fly's Eye Experiment 

The HiRes experiment is searching for ultra high energy cosmic rays (~10^20 eV) using the
air fluorescence technique. Our two detectors, located in Dugway Proving Ground in the desert
of Utah, collect UV light from giant air showers that develop when a cosmic ray particle
interacts with the atmosphere. Using PMTs to resolve signals in time and position, we can
reconstruct the shower geometry and shower profile and calculate arrival direction and energy
of the primary cosmic ray particle.

The questions that are still waiting for answers are:

• What and where are the sources of ultra high energy cosmic rays ?
• Which acceleration mechanisms can lead to these extremely high energies ?
• What is the composition of these cosmic rays ?
• Which features do we see in their energy spectrum ?
• Is there a GZK cutoff that sets an upper limit to their energies, as we would expect ?
