The HiRes experiment is
searching for ultra high energy cosmic rays (~10^20 eV) using the
air fluorescence technique. Our two
detectors, located in Dugway Proving Ground in the desert
of Utah, collect UV light from giant air
showers that develop when a cosmic ray particle
interacts with the atmosphere. Using PMTs
to resolve signals in time and position, we can
reconstruct the shower geometry and shower
profile and calculate arrival direction and energy
of the primary cosmic ray
particle.
