Welcome to 01:750:272 Honors Physics II! This is the home page for the course Website. In case you are looking at a paper copy of this page, its URL is http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/ugrad/272/index.html

Please do bookmark this page, because you'll need to refer to it frequently during the term. The best way to start would be to read the first link in the next section below on "Frequently-Needed Course Links." It provides an overview of the course structure and procedures.

The first meeting of our class will be the lecture on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Please note that RECITATIONS WILL NOT MEET ON JAN. 19 AND 20.

Jan. 30, 2012

WebAssign scores for the first homework assignment have been uploaded into the Gradebook.

There WILL be a quiz in recitations this week. It will be based on the material covered in Assignment 1 and the relevant lectures and recitation. So the quiz will cover fluids and the early material on waves. The instructor will write relevant formulas on the blackboard, so students should not bring a formula sheet.

Feb. 06, 2012

In WebAssign 3, Question 4 part (b) asks for a sketch on paper. Don't bother, because we are not going to collect such papers. For Question 7 you should make use of the textbook's Equation 22-16.

A Practice Exam for the first hour exam has been uploaded to the course Website at the "Exam Copies" link. All students should PRINT the Practice Exam and bring it to class on Monday, Feb. 13 when we'll go over it. Also, students should be prepared to take notes on Feb. 13, because we won't be uploading lecture slides for Feb. 13 to the Website.

Students should bring their Clickers to lecture next Monday, because we'll use them for some of the Practice Exam questions.

This is a really cool new videoclip from NASA. An astronaut in the International Space Station rubs a knitting needle to give it a charge. Then he uses a syringe to release drops of water. The opposite charge gets induced on the drops, and they are attracted to the needle. Many of them go into orbit around the needle!

Feb. 13, 2012

The first hour exam will be on Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 3:25pm to 4:25pm in the Physics Lecture Hall. Note that the starting time of 3:25pm is 10 minutes earlier than our usual lecture start time. AND WE'LL END AT 4:25, FIVE MINUTES EARLIER THAN THE NORMAL END TIME.

Please remain in the lobby until 3:25pm so that I can lay out the exams on the seats. Exams will have stickers with student names on them, and the exams will be laid out alphabetically. Last names starting with "A" will be in the front of the Lecture Hall, while "Z" will be in the back.

The exam will consist of 16 multiple-choice questions, and will be closed book, but you may bring ONE 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper with formulas and notes to consult during the exam. You may write on both sides of this cheat sheet. The numerical values of constants will be provided on the exam.

RECITATIONS WILL NOT MEET ON FEB. 16 AND 17.

Feb. 14, 2012

Here is a SEATING CHART for the exam. You'll need to SCROLL DOWN to see the chart. If you find the names too small to read, then there should be Zoom In option available, and you'll likely need to zoom in twice. The Zoom In button may appear as a + sign. There is also a keyboard shortcut for it: do CTRL+PLUS. In Adobe Acrobat click View - Zoom - Zoom To and then 200%. Remember to set it back to "Fit Width" after you've finished looking at the chart.

Please consider this seating chart to be approximate. But do look at it so that you know where to head to as you enter the Lecture Hall.

Solutions to Exam I are now available. Scroll down to the section on "Frequently-needed course links" and click on "Exam Copies." Also, if you click on the link for the Online Grade Book and log into it, you'll be displayed an exam report which lists the answer you gave to each question, and what the correct answer was. This exam REPORT will be displayed for one week, and then become hidden, but you will have an option to redisplay it if you want. Of course your exam SCORE will remain visible in the Grade Book.

Here is an approximate grading scale for the exam. Please note that at the end of the term, the numerical score on the exam (not these letter grades) will be used in the calculation of an overall score and a final course grade.

Grade Score
A 86-100%
B 76-86%
C 62-76%
D 55-62%
F 0-55%

In WebAssign 4, if a problem doesn't explicitly say that a substance is conducting, you should assume that it is an insulating substance. So Questions 2 and 5 deal with conductors, while Question 3 deals with an insulator. In Question 4, the inner solid sphere is an insulator, while the larger shell is a conductor.

Feb. 27, 2012

In WebAssign 5 Question 2 you would make use of Equation 24-18 in the textbook. You are free to take any path from A to B. I suggest that first you go from A to the origin in a straight line, and evaluate the change in potential. Then go from the origin to B in a straight line, and evaluate the change in potential.

Mar. 05, 2012

A Practice Exam for the second hour exam has been uploaded to the course Website at the "Exam Copies" link. All students should PRINT the Practice Exam and bring it to class on Monday, Mar. 19 when we'll go over it. Also, students should be prepared to take notes on Mar. 19, because we won't be uploading lecture slides for Mar. 19 to the Website.

Mar. 19, 2012

The second hour exam will be on Wednesday, Mar. 21 from 3:25pm to 4:25pm in the Physics Lecture Hall. Note that the starting time of 3:25pm is 10 minutes earlier than our usual lecture start time. That's to give you a little extra time to do the exam. Also note that the exam will end at 4:25pm, not 4:30.

Please remain in the lobby until 3:25pm so that I can lay out the exams on the seats. Exams will have stickers with student names on them, and the exams will be laid out alphabetically. Last names starting with "A" will be in the front of the Lecture Hall, while "Z" will be in the back.

RECITATIONS WILL NOT MEET ON MAR. 22 AND 23.

Here is a SEATING CHART for the exam. You'll need to SCROLL DOWN to see the chart. If you find the names too small to read, then there should be a drop-down menu available where you can select 200%. Remember to set it back to "Fit Width" after you've finished looking at the chart. In Adobe Acrobat click View - Zoom - Zoom To and then 200%. Remember to set it back to "Fit Width" after you've finished looking at the chart.

Please consider this seating chart to be approximate. But do look at it so that you know where to head to as you enter the Lecture Hall.

Solutions to Exam II are now available. Scroll down to the section on "Frequently-needed course links" and click on "Exam Copies." Also, if you click on the link for the Online Grade Book and log into it, you'll be displayed an exam report which lists the answer you gave to each question, and what the correct answer was. Students found Exam II to be somewhat more difficult than Exam I. I'll take that into account at the end of the semester by appropriately adjusting the tentative grading scale I had announced after Exam I.

The solution for Question 8 on Exam II is correct, but I had a "typo" in the notation. Instead of U_i and U_f I should have written K_i and K_f respectively.

Apr. 01, 2012

In WebAssign 8 I had originally intended to assign Problem 26 in Chapter 30. However, WebAssign has some strange bugs in grading the problem, including not realizing that ln(x/y) can alternately be written as ln(x)-ln(y). I recommend that you try the problem on your own, even though it is not assigned.

Apr. 09, 2012

For WebAssign 9 Question 3 you'll need to look up what the radius of the earth is.

Apr. 16, 2012

In WebAssign 10 Question 8, replace the word "imaginary" by "virtual".

Apr. 23, 2012

A Practice Final Exam has been uploaded to the course Website at the "Exam Copies" link. All students should PRINT the Practice Exam and bring it to class on Monday, April 30 when we'll go over it. Also, students should be prepared to take notes on April 30, because we won't be uploading lecture slides for April 30 to the Website.

Mr. Kshitij Wagh will hold a special office hour on Tuesday, May 8 during 2:00-4:00pm in Serin E280.

The final exam will be on Wednesday, May 9 from 1:30pm to 3:00pm in the Physics Lecture Hall. Please remain in the lobby until 1:30pm so that I can lay out the exams on the seats. Exams will have stickers with student names on them, and the exams will be laid out alphabetically. Last names starting with "A" will be in the front of the Lecture Hall, while "Z" will be in the back.

The exam will NOT be cumulative. It will cover the course material AFTER the second hour exam was given.

The exam will consist of 24 multiple-choice questions, and will be closed book, but you may bring ONE 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper with formulas and notes to consult during the exam. You may write on both sides of this cheat sheet. The numerical values of constants will be provided on the exam.

Solutions to the Final Exam have been uploaded to the Exam Copies page, and exam scores and report sheets have been uploaded into the Online Gradebook. Course grades will be uploaded most likely on Thursday afternoon. I am going to use a significantly more lenient grading scale than what I had announced after the first hour exam. You can find that grading scale in the Archive of Past Announcements.
