The background image in these pages shows lowering of the CMS (stands for Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment into its underground cavern. Lowering a 27,500,000 lb detector is not easy (and of course requires detailed knowledge of mechanics!). It was done by the same company which
brought up Kursk submarine from the sea floor in 2001.
CMS is one of the four experiments at Large Hadron Collider, and your
professor is one of the six Rutgers faculty that use it to look for the Higgs boson and other new particles.
