This year we will be using a computerized grading system called Mastering Physics. We're very excited about this new system and feel that it is a great improvement over the WebAssign system that many of you used last semester.

Here are the basic things that you need to know about the homework.

• There will be 13 assignments during the course of the semester.
• The assignments, unless otherwise noted, will be due at 10pm Monday evenings. You should, however, try to complete the assignments before the weekend.
• You are very strongly encouraged to submit the homework on time. However, even if, for some reason, you can't submit on time, it is still important that you do the homework. That's how you'll learn the material. For that reason, we will grant partial credit on a sliding scale. Credit for each assignment will decrease to 25% over the course of 9 hours after the due date. For example, at 1 am it will be worth 75%, at 4 am 50% and at 7 am 25%. It will then remain at 25% for the remainder of the semester.
• You are allowed 5 attempts at the solution for each part of each problem.
• For each wrong answer you will receive a penalty of 5%.
• If you get stuck on a problem, you can ask Mastering Physics to give you a hint. You are strongly encouraged to use these if you are really stuck. In order to encourage you to think hard about the problem before requesting the hints, you will receive a bonus of 3% for each unused hint.
• Your lowest two homework grades will not count against you. At the end of the semester, we will find the two homework assignments for which you lost the greatest number of points. We will then give you full credit for those assignments.

Here are instructions for getting onto Mastering Physics

1. Log onto  Mastering Physics.
2. If it is your first time, click Register.
3. Enter the 6-word access code that is given in the Student Access Kit that you should have purchased along with your text.
4. Enter the school zip code. This is 08901.
5. Enter your first and last names.
6. Enter your email address. (preferably your eden.rutgers.edu address if you have it.)
7. From school name menu choose "Rutgers State Univ/NJ".
8. Create a login name and password of your choosing.
9. Log into Mastering Physics for Young/Freedman.
10. The first time you login, you'll have to enter the Course ID and your Student ID.
    The Course ID is RABEFALL06 .
    Your Student ID is your Rutgers ID .

    Good luck. If you really can't get logged in, as a last resort you can send email to MP Login problem. Please state clearly what your problem is and what the symptoms are.
