Recitations

Recitations take place once a week on Mondays. These are occasions when you can meet in a smaller group with an expert instructor for training in the nitty-gritty of the subject, e.g. problem solving, discussion of basic principles and question and answers. Here you can interact in a personal way with your instructor and your classmates. You will be asked to answer a basic quiz which will also record your attendance. Please bring your questions to the recitation, having tried to resolve them ahead of time. I want to point out that attendance at recitation provides one of the least demanding but most fruitful contributions to your final physics grade and your mastery of the subject.

Time and Place, and grades

So that this very large class can meet in sections small enough for interactions with the instructors, the class is divided into 16 recitation sections, which meet at different times on Mondays, and at different locations. The list of sections is given here.

You are required to go to the recitation section for which you are registered. If you would prefer to go to a different recitation on a regular basis, and if there is room for more students in that section, you need to change your registration. You can contact Ms. Julia Sotory, jsotory@physics. Be sure to include your full name, your student ID number, and a list of three sections you would be willing to enroll in, as often sections are closed.

If, on rare occasions, you need to attend an alternate recitation section for good cause, you need to obtain permission of both instructors. You will take the quiz in the section you attend, but you will need to check that that grade gets entered (by your usual instructor) in the gradebook.

The material to be covered each Monday is what was discussed in lecture the previous week. The homework problems on that material are due at 11:59 PM of the Thursday, after you have discussed the same material ( but NOT the specific homework problems) in recitation. At some point during the recitation, not necessarily at the beginning or end, there will be a quiz on material discussed in the previous week's recitation. You will get three points (out of 10) just for having attended the recitation and handing in the quiz with your name legibly written on it. The remaining 7 points will need to be earned by showing your mastery of the problem.

Note that at the end the recitation grade will be based on the top 11 recitation grades (of 13). The two dropped quizzes are to provide for any legitimate absences, they are not in addition to such excused absences. Anyone with well documented excused absences needs to speak to Prof. Shapiro.
