Homework Assignments

Homework is the place where you really get a proper grasp of the subject. It's where you learn to understand and apply the subject in a personal way. It's problem solving par excellence. Remember, physics is a required subject for many future professions such as medicine, dentistry, biology, etc. This is because its concepts and techniques are an essential underpinning of your future courses and career. That is why we assign homework. You need to be able to apply physics to the challenges presented by your various majors and subsequent jobs. That preparation is provided by your homework assignments and further practice with back-of-chapter problems.

Homework via WebAssign

The homework assignments are to be done online, using a commercial program called WebAssign. You will need to have acquired a WebAssign license for this semester, which you should have gotten with your textbook. If not, you will have to purchase a license, which you can do online from WebAssign after logging in. Unfortunately, you cannot get plain WebAssign for $14.95, because the only option available is WebAssignPLUS for $32.00, which includes electronic copies of the book. Details are given in Using WebAssign, which discusses general procedures, how to get started with WebAssign, changing password and email addresses, requirements on answering questions so as not to be marked wrong even if you know what the answer is, and how to submit and navigate within WebAssign.

There are 14 assignments that count. [In the first week, there is also an introductory assignment, "Introduction to WebAssign", which doesn't count as worth any points, but if you didn't do this last semester, it is worth doing so you don't lose points on subsequent assignments because of not being familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the computer program.] To allow for the possibility that there may be one or two times when you have a legitimate reason to have missed an assignment, your lowest two WebAssign grades will be dropped. Then your total will be scaled so that the perfect grade is worth 16% towards your total course score. It is essential to remember that WebAssign will cut you off at exactly 11:59 PM (on its clock, not yours) on Thursdays, so make sure to get done in plenty of time before that.
