Exams are where I find out what you have learned and mastered of the
physics syllabus. The questions are five answer multiple choice
questions, 17 on each hourly and 34 on the final. By looking at
practice exams you will note that most exam questions require little
computation (just a few lines) but test your understanding of the
basic concepts of physics. Roughly the exams are divided into three
parts: simple, medium, and thoughtful. In 203 a quarter of the
students received an A grade and only ten percent failed the
course. Let's work together to improve these results.
We urge you to study the
practice exams and their solutions which we will post about a week
ahead of exams. I would attend the voluntary review lectures before each
exam. The exam scores, histogram, averages, etc. will be
posted, generally the next day following an exam, at the appropriate
place in our website.

Exam Rules:
You should arrive slightly more than ten minutes in advance of the
time the exam starts.
You may (should) bring to the exam
- several sharpened no. 2 pencils
- a standard hand calculator, with graphing, but no
communication ability.
- One 8 1/2'' x 11'' sheet of paper with handwritten
notes of your choice, but not xeroxes and no attachments.
- A watch. Many exam rooms do not have a clock
It would be best if you do not bring a cell phone or other
communication device to the
exams. If you do, it must be turned off and tucked away in your bags
in a position clearly inaccessible during the exam. You may not use
your cell phone as a clock.
If you must use the rest-room during the exam, you must ask permission
of one of the proctors. And of
course you may not talk to anyone other than a proctor while doing so.
The midterm exams will last 80 minutes, the final three hours.
Cheating on an exam is very serious and will lead to very serious
action, including being reported to the deans and possibly flunking the
course or suspension from school.
