Physics 203-204
fulfills all the physics requirements for science majors, as
well as admission to health profession schools and graduate
schools. It provides an excellent opportunity for
learning physics, the fundamental science, in a comprehensive,
challenging and rewarding way. Gradates of this course have
gone on to distinguished careers in medicine, science, law,
public service etc...This course
requires a good understanding of some math
such as vectors, simple derivatives, trigonometry, algebra etc....
This means: If you aren't fairly comfortable with math (especially algebra
and trigonometry), this may require brushing up. In additon, a calculus course, at least taken concurrently, is a prerequisite. You should be able to do simple differentiations and integrations. You will
in any case need
to invest a lot of time doing problems, studying and getting
help, particularly if you haven't had any physics in high
school or college before.
Through tutorial
hours and individual and group tutoring we provide extensive
personal help for all students in 203. Please take advantage
of these services to make your experience in learning physics
an enjoyable and satisfying one.
In this course
we offer personal tuition at the MSLC at a variety of times
during the week. These sessions are staffed by various
instructors of your choice. Students using this service have
benefitted marketly in 203.
If you have any questions or concerns relating to Physics
203, contact Jeff Nick
or Frank Zimmermann
as described below. Contact Prof. Horton if your
concerns have not been resolved. If you need a special permission number to enroll in
Physics 203, or register for a different section, please
write to Ms. Julia Sotory, jsotory at physics.rutgers.edu,
and include your full name, your student ID number, and a list
of three sections you would be willing to enroll in.

Text
(required): Cutnell &
Johnson, Physics
7th
edition Wiley, available at
Rutgers
University Bookstore (Ferren Mall). The text book is
available in four versions:
- Full Text
(ISBN: 0-471-66315-8) includes Chapters 1–32; this version contains all of the material
for this course as well as Physics 204.
- Volume I
(ISBN: 0-471-66316-6) which includes Chapters 1–17; these are exactly the chapters used
in this course.
- Volume II
(ISBN: 0-471-66324-7) which includes Chapters 18–32; this contains only
material for Physics 204.
If you buy the textbook at the Rutgers Bookstore, make sure you get the version that comes bundled with a WebAssign code. If you have (or want to buy) a used book, i.e., without WebAssign, you can purchase the WebAssign access code separately through the WebAssign website for about $15. Another (very cost effective) option is to buy the online version of the textbook, available through
the WebAssign site for $32. This product (called "WebAssign Plus") contains all of the material in the textbook and includes a WebAssign code. However, it does not include a paper copy of the textbook.
