The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) will be designed and constructed at Michigan State University, the current home of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. This new Facility will provide fast, stopped, and reaccelerated beams of rare isotopes, building on the existing and near term experimental capabilities at the NSCL. The scientific themes are: Physics of Nuclei, Nuclear Astrophysics, Fundamental Interactions, and Applied Benefits. This informal talk will outline the plans for the facility and some of the scientific opportunities in basic and applied nuclear science.
