Title: Giant gravitons in gauge theory

Abstract: The AdS/CFT correspondence gives precise expectations for the ensemble of states of gauge theory in three different regimes: gravitons, giant gravitons, and black holes. While gravitons and black hole are understood by now, the giants have remained a puzzle. In this talk will discuss a class of U(N) matrix models, which includes the superconformal index of super Yang-Mills theory. I will show how any such matrix model can be expressed in terms of a system of free fermions in a certain ensemble. Integrating out the fermions leads to a convergent expansion as a series of determinants. By further averaging over the ensemble, we obtain a formula for the matrix integral as a q-expansion with successive terms suppressed by q^N. This shows how giant gravitons in the dual AdS are encoded in the gauge theory.
