Short Explanation of physsun* Cluster Organization

Default login machine from X-terminals is physics.rutgers.edu. This name actually represents a cluster consisting of a number of Sun machines called physsun* (where * represents number from 1 up to last Sun machine in the cluster). When you log onto physics.rutgers.edu, you will actually log onto a randomly selected one of physsun* machines, but you should never need to explicitly use that name.

Newly logged users will be automatically distributed to various physsun* machines in a "round-robin" fashion, hence averaging the load on all machines and improving performance in general.

If you are using an NCD X terminal, this means that the default option you are presented to from the chooser will be "physics - physics xdm cluster". Selecting this choice will cause your X session to open on one of the physsun* machines (* could be from 1 to 8 currently).

If you are using a Sun based X terminal, you will see a chooser window listing all of systems available for you to log into for your xsession. These choices will also reflect the number of people on each available system and the load so that you can make an informed choice. If you pick one and click OK you will then find yourself at the normal login screen. When you logout the X terminal will return to the chooser.

Please do not try to log directly into any one of the physsun* machines directly, except from Sun based X terminals. Please, when possible, always log into physics.rutgers.edu. For reasons of simplicity of maintenance we cannot guarantee that any given physsun* machine will be available at any given time, but we can guarantee that if you log into physics.rutgers.edu a machine will be available.
