Printing in the Rutgers Physics Department

There are a number of printers available for public use in the Physics Department via the local area network. These are accessed via queues on our central print server system via the LPD protocol. The network name of the print server is physprint.rutgers.edu. The available printers are summarized in the following table:

On the Sun Unix systems, printing can be done using the lpr command. The format is "lpr -P queue-name file-name". For example,

lpr -P 3w listing.txt

This same command will work on most of the staff-supported Linux systems. However, in that case the queue name must be preceeded with the letter "p". This is due to a restriction in the CUPS printing system used with Linux. For example,

lpr -P p3w listing.txt

On printers that support printing on both sides of the page, but which do not print on both sides by default, two-sided printing can be selected by including the switch setting "-Z duplex" in the lpr command.

On printers that support printing on both sides of the page, and which do print on both sides by default, one-sided printing can be selected by including the switch setting "-Z simplex" in the lpr command.

Setting up printing on Windows PC's

All printers are accessible from PC's running Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 via the Windows "Add Printer" wizard.
However, it may be necessary to first turn on LPR Port Monitor.

To verify that LPR Port Monitor is turned on:
In Control Panel, click Programs and Features, click Turn Windows features on or off,
expand Print and Document Services, select the LPR Port Monitor check box, and click OK.



Once "LPR Port Monitor" is turned on, to add a printer in Windows Vista and Windows 7:
In Control Panel, click Devices and Printers, then click Add a Printer,
then click Add a local printer. Click Create a new port, and from the drop-down list select LPR Port and click Next.

On the next screen, enter physprint.rutgers.edu as the "Name or address of server providing lpd", and the desired queue name from the table above as the "Name of printer or print queue on the server" and click OK.

After this, setup follows the normal Windows convention to select a driver specific to the model of the printer.

To add a printer in Windows 8.1:
Ctrl Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a Printer.
From the Add Printer window, click The printer I want isn't listed.

In the next window, check Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and click Next.
In the next window, select Create a new port and select LPR Port from the corresponding drop-down menu.

On the next screen, enter physprint.rutgers.edu as the "Name or address of server providing lpd", and the desired queue name from the table above as the "Name of printer or print queue on the server" and click OK.

After this, setup follows the normal Windows convention to select a driver specific to the model of the printer.

Setting up printing on Linux PC's

The specifics vary from one Linux flavor to another, but the general sequence is as follows:

  1. System > Administration > Printing.
  2. Select New or Add.
  3. Select Network Printer, then LPD/LPR Host or Printer.
  4. Host: physprint.rutgers.edu.
  5. For Queue, enter the name of one of the above printers. Click Forward or Next.
  6. Select an appropriate driver in the Choose Driver field. If you don't see a driver for your printer, you can use Generic PostScript Printer. Click Forward or Next.
  7. If Installable Options window appears, check "Duplex" box if appropriate, and then click Forward or Next.
  8. If Describe Printer window appears, provide Printer Name with Queue name. Click Apply, Forward or Next
  9. .

Setting up printing on Mac OS X

All the printers listed above can also be accessed from Macs running OS X.

  1. Start System Preferences.
  2. Select Printers & Scanners.
  3. Click on "+" to add a printer.
  4. Click on the IP icon.
  5. Enter physprint.rutgers.edu in the Address field.
  6. Choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD in the Protocol menu.
  7. Enter the queue name for one of the above printers for the Queue field.
  8. Enter a name and location for the printer so you can identify it in the Printer pop-up.
  9. Select an appropriate driver in the "Use" field. If you don't see a driver for your printer,
    you can use Generic PostScript Printer. Then click OK.
  10. Click on Add to add the printer.
