Funded through SNF SINERGIA Project “Understanding nanofriction and dissipation across phase transitions” we open in SISSA Trieste two postdoctoral openings ("assegni di ricerca") in the area centered around nanoscale tribology (friction, dissipation, adhesion, wear) involving modeling, theory, and molecular dynamics computer simulation of nanofrictional and nonlinear dissipation phenomena especially in presence of continuous phase transitions. The ideal candidate has a a doctoral degree in physics or equivalent with a good theory background, deep understanding and strong motivation in either (position "3")  Modeling and theory of dissipation, friction, and phase transitions; or (position "4")  Molecular dynamics simulation and modeling of dissipation and frictional sliding in nanosystems; or both. Prior understanding of nanofriction is not a prerequisite but curiosity in this direction will be appreciated. The Trieste group leader is E. Applications are invited for two postdoc positions, available at CNR-IOM DEMOCRITOS Simulation Center, hosted by the International School for Advances Studies (www.sissa.it) in Trieste (Italy). The appointments are for one year, renewable for a second year. The expected starting date will be early in 2012, and is negotiable depending on the candidate availability. Research will involve:

a) First-principles modeling of photo- and electro-catalytic processes, including water oxidation and carbon dioxide reduction, catalyzed by inorganic complexes, metal and metal-oxide surfaces.

b) First-principles modeling of supported nanoparticles for heterogeneous catalysis, including the characterization of key intermediates in the water-gas shift reaction on Au/TiO2 and of functionalized carbon-based nanostructures.

All these research activities will involve a strong interaction with experimental groups and will be carried out in the context of the DEMOCRITOS theoretical research group (www.democritos.it/the-group) based at the ELETTRA synchrotron radiation center  (www.elettra.trieste.it).

Candidates must hold a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related discipline, and have good knowledge of electronic structure theory. Prior experience in first-principles calculations would be an advantage. Consideration of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
