SISSA Trieste has a Condensed Matter Theory postdoctoral opening ("assegno di ricerca") in the area centered around electronic structure, conductance, and local magnetism of nanocontacts and adsorbates, especially with magnetic molecules and transition metal atoms, also with Kondo effects.

The ideal candidate has a a doctoral degree in physics or equivalent with a good background, deep understanding and strong motivation in either a) electronic structure theory and phenomenology, based on DFT and possibly also quantum chemical calculations, including molecules, magnetism, and nanosystems; or strongly correlated electron theory and phenomenology, based on DMFT, NRG and many body calculations. Experience with Kondo effect is desirable but not mandatory. The Trieste group leader is E. Tosatti, and other collaborators include M. Fabrizio and R. Requist. The project will involve interactions with strong experimental groups in Trieste and outside. The group encourages team work and has resources to support participation to conferences. Scientific questions concerning this position to be addressed to tosatti-at-sissa.it.

The appointment will be for one year (renewable), and is immediately available. The gross yearly salary is 23,760 Euro tax free, corresponding to a take home salary around 1,470 Euro/month. Interested candidates should arrange for a CV with a list of publications, and at least two reference letters to reach E. Tosatti (tosatti-at-sissa.it). Formal paper applications to be submitted separately to SISSA according to rules at http://www.sissa.it/main/?p=A3_B4&id=1040, reaching SISSA no later than December 19th, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. Administrative questions concerning this position to be obtained at concorsi-at-sissa.it.

SISSA is part of the wider Trieste scientific campus, which includes the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the University of Trieste, the Synchrotron Facility Elettra and Free Electron Laser Fermi, the CNR-IOM Experimental TASC Laboratory, and the CNR-IOM Democritos National Simulation Laboratory-- the latter based on SISSA's premises. All activities of SISSA are conducted in English, no knowledge of Italian is required. SISSA offers help with children, with a subsidized kindergarden and other facilities within its premises.
