A PhD / PostDoc position is available in the Department of Computational=
Materials Design at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung in D&u=
uml;sseldorf, Germany.

The focus of the project is on multiscale atomistic simulations of fract=
ure mechanisms in modern functional materials. In particular, the influence=
of impurities on the interaction and mobility of extended defects (disloca=
tions and grain boundaries) in metals will be investigated using a combinat=
ion of ab inito density functional theory and semi-empirical atomistic pote=
ntials.

Outstanding candidates with a background in solid state physics, materia=
ls science or chemistry are encouraged to apply for this position. Experien=
ce with atomistic simulations and/or continuum mechanics models will be adv=
antageous, but is not a precondition.

The Max-Planck Institut für Eisenforschung offers a unique range of=
expertise in the field of high-tech structural materials design and analys=
is. In-house techniques cover both theoretical and experimental methods and=
are intensively exploited for multidisciplinary collaborations. In particu=
lar, results from this project will serve as input for higher level continu=
um mechanics simulations and shall be validated by in-house casting and ana=
lyzing the theoretically proposed alloys.

The Computational Materials Design department of Prof. Jörg Neugeba=
uer provides a dynamic and enthusiastic team of young scientists together w=
ith state-of-the-art simulation techniques and excellent computational faci=
lities.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunities employer. Women are str=
ongly encouraged to apply and will be given preference over male applicants=
with a comparable scientific profile.

Interested candidates should send an application letter, CV, and list of pu=
blications, preferably by email, to:
