One post-doc position devoted to the modeling of multiferroics=20
will be opened in the group of Dr. Silvia Picozzi (expected start: May 200=
9).

The position is funded by=20
the European Research Council (ERC) - IDEAS Starting Grant for=20
independent research (2007) within the following project:=20
=93BISMUTH: Breaking Inversion Symmetry in Magnets:=20
Understand via THeory=94. The project is hosted by=20
the CASTI Regional Laboratory of the=20
CNR-INFM (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche =96 Istituto Nazionale di Fisi=
ca=20
della Materia), located in L=92Aquila (Italy) (for=20
further info, please visit our website=20
http://www.casti.aquila.infn.it/homepages/bismuth/index.html) =20

The research activity will focus on materials modelling for advanced=20
multiferroics,=20
with simulations mainly performed using state-of-the-art density-functional=
-=20
based approaches. Multiferroics (i.e.=20
materials where ferroelectricity and magnetism coexist) are presently=20
drawing enormous interests, due to their=20
technologically-relevant multifunctional character and to the astoundingly=
=20
rich playground for fundamental condensedmatter=20
physics they constitute. The research activity will be mostly devoted to th=
e=20
interplay between ferroelectricity and=20
electronic degrees of freedom in magnets, i.e. on those cases where spin- o=
r=20
orbital- or charge-ordering can be the=20
driving force for a spontaneous polarization to develop.=20

Applicants should hold (or should be about to get) a PhD in Physics,=20
Chemistry, Materials Science or in a closely=20
related subject, with a wide theoretical and/or computational aspect. A=20
strong motivation for forefront research in=20
advanced compounds and a keen interest in materials theory and modeling is =
required. Previous experience in density=20
functional simulations or magnetism or strongly-correlated-materials is=20
helpful.=20

The contract will be initially for one year and renewable up to two years.=
=20
Consistent with the Italian standards for postdoc=20
positions (such as =93Assegni di ricerca=94), the net salary will be 1400-1=
500=20
Euros per month, compatibile with an=20
average living standard in L=92Aquila. Considerable fundings will be availa=
ble=20
to the post-doc for conferences, schools=20
and research exchange visits.=20

Interested candidates should send via e-mail their CV and list of=20
publications (.pdf format preferred) as soon as possibile to:=20
