 The Department of Materials at the University of Oxford has committed
 significant resources in the area of Ab-initio Materials Modelling by
 appointing three new faculty members during the academic year 2008/2009:
 Dr Jonathan Yates (Lecturer in Materials, formerly Cambridge),
 Dr Feliciano Giustino (Lecturer in Materials, formerly UC Berkeley),
 and Prof. Nicola Marzari (Professor of Materials, formerly MIT).
 The activity of the new members will integrate and expand the research
 directions of the Materials Modelling Laboratory currently lead by
 Prof. David Pettifor.
 
 The Materials Modelling Laboratory strongly encourages outstanding
 students to apply for DPhil (PhD) projects in the area of
 computational materials science within the Department of Materials.
 The most talented candidates could secure funding through
 EPSRC Doctoral Training scholarships awarded by the Department
 (http://www.materials.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate/uk.html and
 http://www.materials.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate/eu.html)
 or through the Clarendon Fund scolarships which are awarded
 within University-wide competitions

 The proposed research projects span a broad spectrum of topics in
 computational materials science, including magnetic resonance and
 photoemission spectroscopy, superconductivity, molecular transport,
 electrochemistry, solar energy conversion, hydrogen storage, prediction
 of crystal structures, and multiscale modelling of mechanical and

 The deadlines for applications are 23 January 2009 and 13 March 2009.
