The department Computational Materials Design offers a Postdoctoral
position.

The aim of the project is to develop a practical scheme to calculate
band offsets in the framework of GW theory.

A critical aspect in all modern electronic devices are the properties of
heterointerfaces, e.g. in Schottky contacts (metal/semiconductor) in
integrated circuits or heterointerfaces in LEDs or solar cells.
Electronic structure calculations, notably within density-functional
theory (DFT) have become an important tool to understand and complement
experiment. However, the energetic position of electronic bands is
insufficiently reproduced with standard DFT methods. Many-body
perturbation theory in the GW approximation has evolved into a reliable
correction method. Recent developments allow applications which have
recently been out of reach due to the huge numerical effort of this
approximation. The aim of this project is to employ this approach to
technologically important heterointerfaces and to develop a practical
scheme for band offsets in the framework of the GW method.

Applicants should hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, or materials
science, and have worked with density-functional theory before.
Knowledge of the GW method and/or experience with interface calculations
will be advantageous, but not required if the applicant is able to work
him/herself very quickly into new fields. The MPIE provides excellent
working conditions in terms of computational ressources, access to
supercomputers of the Max-Planck society, literature access, and good
international contacts to top groups of the field. The candidate should
enjoy working in an open and dynamic environment, and be able to perform
research at the top level of the international scientific community.

The research is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The
salary will be according to the rules of the MPIE (E13/TVÖD). The
initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of
extension for two more years according to the DFG rules if the candidate
is taking an active role in the extension application.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunities employer. Women are
strongly encouraged to apply and will be given preference over male
applicants with a comparable scientific profile.

Interested candidates should send an application letter, CV, and list of
publications, preferably by email, to:

A post-doctoral position is available at the Computational Materials
Design department at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in
Duesseldorf, Germany, to work on scale-bridging studies of the elastic
contributions to nucleation and initial microstructure formation in
the eutectic Ti-Fe system. The research will consist in (i) first
principles calculations for solids as well as (ii) development and
application of state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary and multi-physics
methods. The project is a part of a joint research together with
(i) phase-field modeling activities led by Prof. H. Emmerich at
the Computational Materials Engineering department, Center for Computational
Engineering Science and Institute of Minerals Engineering, RWTH Aachen
University, and (ii) experimental studies at the Institute for Complex Materials
of Prof. J. Eckert at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials
Research in Dresden.

The second post-doctoral position at the CMD department is available
to work on the development of new materials for high-temperature
applications in a close cooperation with industrial partners.
The research will consist in ab initio calculations. Specifically for
this second position, communication skills in German are welcome.

Experience in ab initio calculations for solids is required.

Applications should be sent to Dr. Martin Friak (friak at mpie dot de)
