Two Postdoc positions are available immediately in the School of Physi= cs at Trinity College Dublin and the Center for Research on Adaptive Nanost= ructures and Nanodevices, CRANN (www.crann.tcd.ie), I= reland flagship research center for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Both th= e positions will be in the “Computational Spintronics Group” he= aded by Prof. Stefano Sanvito. 

 

Both the positions will involve the use and the development of density= functional theory combined with quantum transport. In particular the succe= ssful candidate will work together with the development team of the Smeagol package (www.smeagol.tcd.ie), to which several new functionalities will be ad= ded. For both the positions previous experience with electronic structure m= ethods is required. The specific research topics of the two positions are:<= /span>

 

DNAseq:

To investigate transport across DNA molecules with the aim of explorin= g future protocol for DNA sequencing. This position is sponsored by the Eur= opean Union under the 7th framework and it is part of a network = including partners from Serbia, Germany, Israel and Switzerland. Willingnes= s to work together with experimental groups and previous experience with mo= lecular dynamics and with biological systems will be considered as an advan= tage.

 

 

 

TMRtor:

To investigate spin-transport in magnetic tunnel junctions and nanostr= uctures. The position will involve the development of methods for calculati= ng spin-transfer torque from density functional theory and will involve a t= ight collaboration with the Magnetism group of Prof. J.M.D. Coey and with t= he electronic structure group of Dr. C. Ederer. Previous experience with qu= antum transport from first principles and computational magnetism will be c= onsidered as an advantage, as well as some experience with micromagnetic ca= lculations.

 

The starting salary will be around 42,000 Euro/year with an initial co= ntract of 2 years eventually renewable (one year for DNAseq and 3 years for= TMRtor). Large computational infrastructures are available both at the Tri= nity Center for High Performance Computing (www.tchpc.tcd.ie) and at the Irish Center for High End Computing (www.ichec.ie).
