 (ANR) project &laquo; Parallelization for the simulation of Materials &raq=

Project scope:<br/>
The power of today&rsquo;s computers makes it possible to realize simulatio=
ns based on a hierarchy of models in order to predict the aging of material=
s in various environments and describing phenomena from the atomic to the m=
acroscopic scale. The issue of the present project concerns the evolution o=
f the mechanical properties of irradiated materials, such as the structural=
 materials of nuclear power plants. The concepts and the numerical tools ar=
e, however, somewhat generic. In practice, simulations at different scales =
are chained, from the finest to the coarsest. To obtain reliable quantitati=
ve predictions on real materials, a gain of several orders of magnitude is =
required, regarding the size of the simulated systems as well as the execut=
ion speed. The global purpose of the ANR-project &laquo;Parallelization for=
 the simulation of Materials&raquo; (ParMat) is to increase significantly t=
he power of the software at three consecutive scales (ab initio computation=
s on an atomic scale, kinetic Monte Carlo based computations and computatio=
ns based on a mean field model towards microscopic scales).<br/>
<br/>
The overall scope of the project consists in removing the bottlenecks appea=
ring in the parallelization of those codes, in order to reach satisfactory =
scalability. Depending on the codes, new algorithms introducing parallelism=
 at the highest level will be developed and tested on massively parallel ma=
chines with up to 32000 processors, with computations on petaflopic machine=
s within view.<br/>
<br/>
Position: the present position regards the parallelization and optimisation=
 of the kinetic Monte Carlo code LAKIMOCA developed at EDF and the Universi=
ty of Lille. This code is dedicated to the modeling of radiation damage in =
metallic alloys.<br/>
<br/>
The work required is:<br/>
<br/>
1/ to analyse the different methods published in the literature for the par=
allelization and optimisation of kinetic Monte Carlo codes and assess the p=
ossibility of adapting these methods to the parallelization of LAKIMOCA and=
 to the study of radiation damage.<br/>
<br/>
2/ the implementation of the most well adapted method to the use of LAKIMOC=
A on massively parallel machines, such as the IBM Blue Gene.<br/>
<br/>
The initial duration of the post doc project is one year.<br/>
The possibility of continuation/extension can be discussed.<br/>
This work will be done in very close collaboration between EDF (located clo=
se to Fontainebleau, south of Paris) and the Laboratoire de M&eacute;tallur=
gie Physique et Genie des Mat&eacute;riaux from Lille University.<br/>

Required skills:<br/>
Good knowledge in physics or metallurgy, very good knowledge of c programmi=
ng and parallelisation techniques.<br/>
