Endowed Chair in Astrophysics
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Rutgers University invites
applications for the newly-endowed George and Margaret Downsbrough
Professor of Astrophysics. The endowment includes a substantial
annual research budget. We are seeking an astronomer with outstanding
accomplishments and excellent future promise in a research area that
both broadens, and contacts with, the interests of the current faculty
group. The appointee, who may be either an observer or a theorist,
will also assist in further development of the astrophysics program at
Rutgers.
Rutgers University has a 10% share in SALT, an 11-meter optical
telescope in South Africa, which has recently become operational, and
has access to other telescopes at SAAO. It is also participating in
the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and numerous other projects. Current
astrophysics research interests at Rutgers include cosmology, dark
matter, galaxy clusters, galaxy dynamics and evolution, globular
clusters, gravitational lensing, supernovae and their remnants, and
instrumentation development. The Department is also strengthening its
particle phenomenology group. More information about astrophysics
research and resources at Rutgers can be found at the group
website or by e-mail from any of the current astronomy
faculty.
Review of applications will begin in early January 2008 and will
continue until the position is filled. Rutgers University, which is
an Equal Opprtunity/Affirmative Action employer, wishes to further
diversify its faculty, and will give special consideration to female
candidates and to members of minority groups.
Applications should include a complete CV, publication list, and a
short (few pages) statement of research accomplishments and plans,
together with a cover note. They should be addressed to
